2012 election more about base than undecideds?

Conventional wisdom dictates that President Obama and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney will spend the next 78 days assiduously courting the sliver of voters — somewhere between five and 10 percent of the electorate — who call themselves political independents and insist they remain genuinely undecided about which candidate to support.
